Who’s In Your Corner?

The Performance Fire Triangle: Why Support is a Tactical Resource

All the successes myself and my clients have ever had is more than a result of the hard work and focus.

It’s also a reflection of the support we have received along the way.

Even the loneliest sports, which is a title often given to Boxing, but applies to endurance events too, where you are out on your own is still a team effort.

Your friends, your family, your training partners, your coaches, even your coworkers all have an effect on how you perform.

So while you can’t necessarily choose your co workers, or your family, like you can with friends etc.

You can choose your relationships with them.

Understanding the Biopsychosocial (BPS) Model of Performance

There has been a lot of talk in the rehab space about the Biopsychosocial model of pain.

That BPS model is equally important across all areas of human performance.

  • “Bio” refers to the physicality.

  • “Psycho” refers to the psychology, the mentality

  • “Social” refers to the people you have around you and the the relationships with those people.

The Performance Triangle: Fuel, Oxygen, and Heat

We can imagine those three elements like the fire triangle (Fuel, Oxygen, Heat) where simply removing any one of the three elements extinguishes the fire.

A diagram of the Biopsychosocial model used by Dave Hedges Movement Therapy to explain the link between physical health, mental state, and social support in injury recovery and athletic performance.

If our Bio, our Psycho or our Social is removed, or smothered, our performance is extinguished.

It’s why a mediocre coach with a great relationship with his athlete can still have great success and a great coach with no relationship skills may not.

Build Your Support System

Build relationships, lean into support and watch as your “bio” and your “psycho” flourish.

And reduce contact with those who take away from it.

Simple

Not Easy

Key Takeaways for High Performance
  • The BPS Model: Performance is never just about the body; it is an intersection of your physical health, your mindset, and your community.

  • The Relationship Catalyst: Technical skill in coaching or training is often secondary to the quality of the human connection.

  • The Fire Triangle: If you are feeling "burnt out" or stuck, check which side of your triangle is missing. Is it a physical issue, a mental block, or a lack of social support?
