You're Not Lost

We all get lost.
I have a call booked in with a potential new client who, as part of his initial email said just that.
In fact, this is pretty much my MO, especially the longer I’m in this coaching game.
I help people who are lost.
That’s where I started to think of coaching as this idea of Google Maps.
Or whatever SatNav App you prefer
You enter your location, you enter your destination and it plots a route, or routes to get you there.
Routes that you can adapt and adjust.
I’m sure I don’t need to tell you how a SatNav app works,,,,,
I see coaching as just the same.
A client comes to me, we figure out where they are through chatting and assessment.
We find out where they want to go, even if it’s just a blue sky dream goal, it gives us our heading.
Then I plan the route.
And we get to work.
As goals, that destination changes, so does the route.
As different obstacles pop up, road works, road closures, scenic routes, avoiding tolls etc, sorry that’s SatNav again, it could be work stress, family events, injury flare ups, an interesting competition/event you fancy a crack at
Whatever it is, we detour off, and we work our way back to the main route.
Once we have our destination, and we know where we are, we are never lost.
Ever.
We maybe off track, we may have to back track, but we have a heading, we know where we’ve been, we can navigate.

This, now I’m writing it, is part of why I have struggled to describe what I do.
My coaching service looks so different depending on the client.
Some clients just want the route planned out so they can follow it, they’re like what your Dad probably did, and I certainly have done, and they’re driving with a map held open on the steering wheel.
They want minimal help and assistance.
Others, I’m in the passenger seat beside them calling out every turn.
The key though is simply this.
You drive.
You set the destination, I’ll help you if you’re unsure.
And then you drive, I’ll keep you on the right heading.
Simple.
Not Easy
